What is the church holiday on 13 June
According to the new church calendar, Orthodox believers commemorate Saint Akilina the Elder on 13 June. Akilina was born in the Phoenician city of Byblos into a Christian family. According to church tradition, even as a child she spoke openly about her faith and urged others to accept Christianity. During the reign of Emperor Diocletian, when Christians were being persecuted, Akilina was denounced to the local authorities. The girl was brought before the governor Volusianus, who demanded that she renounce her faith. Despite threats and punishment, Aquilina refused to renounce Christianity. According to tradition, after brutal torture, she was sentenced to death. She died around the year 293. Christians later buried the martyr, and her relics were subsequently transferred to Constantinople, where a church was built in her honour. In Christian tradition, Saint Akilina is regarded as a symbol of steadfastness, devotion to one’s convictions and strength of spirit.
What is celebrated in Ukraine on 13 June
Every year on the second Saturday of June, Ukraine celebrates All-Ukrainian Furniture Maker’s Day. In 2026, the holiday falls on 13 June. This is a professional day for craftsmen, designers, technologists, manufacturers and all specialists working in the furniture industry. Although the holiday does not have official state status, it has become a tradition for those in the profession. The history of furniture-making spans thousands of years. Some of the oldest examples were found as far back as Ancient Egypt — these were wooden tables, chairs, chests and beds, which over time became not only household items but also works of art. Ukrainian traditions of furniture-making also have a long history. Folk craftsmen worked with wood, creating chests, tables, benches and other household items, which were often decorated with carvings and ornaments. Such pieces reflected the distinctive features of regional culture and were passed down from generation to generation. Today, the furniture industry combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies. Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on the environmental friendliness of materials, the possibility of recycling, and the creation of functional furniture for small spaces.
