Israel may have used secret bases near Iran: what is known
This is according to CNN.
Israeli forces were active near the border with Iran
According to the channel’s sources, during the war with Iran, Israel secretly deployed elite military and intelligence units to Azerbaijan. They allegedly operated from several locations in the south of the country, close to the Iranian border. The nearest positions were located approximately 100 kilometres from the city of Tabriz, which Israel had targeted. According to CNN, special forces were operating at these sites, gathering intelligence and conducting operations using drones.
Azerbaijan has dismissed CNN’s report
The report states that the deployment of forces in Azerbaijan was part of a wider network of covert Israeli positions in the region. CNN sources claim that such facilities also existed in Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Somaliland. Initially, they were established for potential rescue operations, but their remit later expanded to include intelligence gathering and support for military missions. The Azerbaijani Embassy in the US has dismissed these claims as baseless and stated that the country has not permitted its territory to be used for operations against third countries. The Azerbaijani authorities have also stated that such reports are aimed at creating tension in the region.
Why Azerbaijan is important to Israel
According to CNN, a presence near the Iranian border gave Israel the opportunity to gather additional intelligence on Iran’s military activities and potentially respond to threats. Israel and Azerbaijan have maintained security cooperation for many years. Baku supplies Israel with some of its oil, whilst Israel sells modern weaponry to Azerbaijan. CNN notes that prior to the war, Israeli forces were conducting preparatory operations near the border with Iran, particularly involving reconnaissance equipment. There are currently no official comments from the Israeli government regarding the channel’s report.
