Italy has provided Ukraine with military assistance worth more than 3 billion euros
Italy has provided Ukraine with weapons, equipment and military hardware worth more than €3 billion since the start of the full-scale war. This was stated by the Chief of the General Staff of the Italian Defence Ministry, General Luciano Portolano, as preparations were underway to approve the 12th package of military aid for Kyiv. It is reported by The Public with reference to Ilsole24ore.
According to the general, the supplies are being carried out under 11 interdepartmental decrees that allowed Ukraine to receive a wide range of military equipment. Currently, the Italian government is preparing to extend this mechanism for another year, which paves the way for the approval of a new support package. The overall logic of the assistance will remain unchanged, despite internal discussions within the Italian ruling coalition.
Portolano stressed that Rome is aware of the balance of power between Ukraine and Russia and is ready to continue to contribute to the achievement of a ceasefire and sustainable peace. At the same time, he noted that the decision on Italy's possible participation in a post-war mission, including under an international mandate, will be made by the country's political leadership.
The General also drew attention to the wider security context in Europe, emphasising the growth of hybrid threats from Russia. According to him, modern conflicts go beyond classical warfare and cover cyberspace, critical infrastructure and the information environment. Under these conditions, defence preparedness and support for allies become a matter of shared responsibility of states and societies.
