The European Parliament is preparing to approve a reparations loan to Ukraine under an accelerated procedure
The European Parliament will apply the urgency procedure to quickly make a decision on the so-called reparations loan to Ukraine after the political agreement of the EU leaders on the use of frozen Russian assets. This was reported by the press service of the European Parliament.
On Tuesday, MEPs supported the acceleration of legislative consideration of the relevant draft law. The vote is expected to take place at the plenary session in January 2026.
The European Parliament explains that the new financial instrument should help cover Ukraine's urgent needs. These include support for the state budget, strengthening military capabilities, developing the defence industry and further integrating Ukraine into the European defence industrial base. The proposed loan will be linked to the existing mechanisms of financial assistance and credit cooperation between the EU and Ukraine.
After approval by the European Parliament, the initiative must be approved by the EU member states. The EU heads of state and government are expected to discuss further steps to freeze Russia's assets and support Ukraine at a summit in Brussels on 18 and 19 December 2025.
