Latvia has stepped up security at its hydroelectric power station and large underground gas storage facility due to the threat from Russia
This is according to Reuters.
The security measures were stepped up following recent warnings from the leaders of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland that Western intelligence agencies have detected Russia preparing provocations against critical infrastructure in the region. The Kremlin has dismissed these allegations as ‘scare tactics’.
According to the Latvian Prime Minister, due to setbacks on the front line, the Russian leadership is seeking a “quick victory”, so the threat of hybrid attacks is now greater than ever before. In his view, “anything is possible”.
Consequently, Kulbergs has appealed to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte to provide the country with more air defence capabilities and to increase the Alliance’s military presence on Latvian territory. Riga is also asking for the new anti-drone system, which Latvia is developing jointly with Ukraine, to be integrated into NATO’s defence system as soon as possible.
It should be recalled that in June 2026, Sweden reported that Russia might attempt to test NATO’s cohesion and the Alliance’s readiness to fulfil its collective defence commitments.
