The EU has imposed sanctions on Russians who tortured Ukrainian prisoners of war in Olenivka and at the remand centre in Taganrog
This was announced by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Among those subject to sanctions is Dmytro Neelov, deputy head of the Olenivka prison colony. He was directly responsible for the mass killing of Ukrainian defenders on the night of 29 July 2022. At that time, Neelov deliberately delayed the evacuation of the wounded, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Pre-trial detention centre No. 2 in Taganrog, Russia, where journalist Viktoria Roshchina was systematically subjected to abuse, has also been placed under sanctions. According to the Media Initiative for Human Rights, the detention centre in Taganrog is described as “one of the most brutal places of detention for Ukrainians on Russian territory”.
“The sanctions provide for the freezing of assets, a ban on EU citizens and companies providing them with funds or economic resources, as well as a ban on entry into and transit through the EU,” the Foreign Ministry states.
The ministry adds that, according to the UN, 95 per cent of released Ukrainian prisoners of war report having been subjected to torture.
