Legendary French footballer and manager Zinedine Zidane is set to take charge of the French national team following the 2026 World Cup.

According to insider Nicolo Schira, the 54-year-old is set to replace Didier Deschamps as head coach of Les Bleus. Zidane’s contract with the French national team is expected to run until the 2030 World Cup.

This information has also been confirmed by another football insider, Fabrizio Romano. According to him, the third-place play-off at the 2026 World Cup will be Didier Deschamps’ last match in charge of the French national team.

Didier Deschamps has been in charge of the French national team since July 2012. Under his leadership, the team won the 2018 World Cup, finished as runners-up at the 2022 World Cup, won the 2021 Nations League and reached the final of the 2016 European Championship.

Zinedine Zidane has not been in a coaching role since 2021, when he stepped down as head coach of Real Madrid. During his two spells with the club, he won 11 trophies, including three consecutive Champions League titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

As a reminder, in the semi-final of the 2026 World Cup, the French national team lost 0–2 to Spain. The French team’s next match will be the third-place play-off against the loser of the England v Argentina semi-final.
