Lebanon is asking Ukraine to extradite a man suspected of having links to Mossad
This is reported by AFP, citing a source within Hezbollah and the head of Lebanon’s General Security Service.
According to AFP’s sources, the man was arrested in September 2025 after a motorcycle carrying a concealed explosive device was discovered on the road to Beirut International Airport. It was following this incident that he came under suspicion of working for Mossad.
AFP sources claim that the man remained in custody until 6 March 2026. During the Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, they claim, he managed to escape and take refuge on the premises of the Ukrainian embassy.
The head of Lebanon’s General Security Service, Hassan Shukair, stated that after checking his name and photograph, it became clear that the man was wanted by the Lebanese authorities, and several arrest warrants had already been issued for him. That is why the Lebanese side informed the Ukrainian embassy that he must be handed over to the country’s authorities immediately.
What exactly is the Lebanese side accusing him of?
Lebanese security forces claim that the man may be linked to a cell associated with Mossad, which allegedly planned assassinations and bombings in the southern suburbs of Beirut. It is also reported that law enforcement officers have detained five suspected accomplices and referred them to court.
According to Hassan Shukair, on 10 March the Ukrainian embassy allegedly approached the Lebanese authorities with a request to allow a Ukrainian citizen, who was staying at the diplomatic mission and had lost his passport, to leave via Beirut airport.
AFP also notes that the Ukrainian embassy in Beirut did not respond to the agency’s request for comment.
It should be recalled that, against the backdrop of intensified Israeli ground operations in southern Lebanon, the question of a post-conflict strategy is being discussed. Among the options mentioned are not only military control but also the establishment of a permanent civilian presence.
