The Netherlands plans to provide more than €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine in 2027–2029
The future Dutch government, formed by a coalition of the D66, VVD and CDA parties, plans to allocate more than €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine in 2027–2029. These intentions are set out in the coalition agreement presented by the leaders of the factions on 30 January.
According to the document, approximately €3 billion will be allocated to military support over three years. In addition, the Netherlands plans to allocate nearly €400 million to other areas of assistance to Ukraine. Non-military programmes will be financed from the international development and foreign trade budget, while the Ministry of Defence will be responsible for the defence component.
The coalition agreement emphasises that the war in Ukraine is a matter of security for the whole of Europe. The Netherlands intends to continue both military and financial support for Ukraine for several years, as well as insisting on the use of frozen Russian assets. It is separately noted that Ukraine is on an irreversible path to EU and NATO membership, and the pace of integration will be determined by its own achievements and compliance with the criteria.
At the same time, the D66, VVD and CDA parties have agreed to form a minority government, which is unusual for the Netherlands. The coalition has 66 seats in the Second Chamber, ten short of a majority, and 16 seats short in the First Chamber. This means that the government will have to seek the support of opposition forces to pass each bill. Despite criticism from part of the opposition, coalition leaders say they are ready to work in the new political reality.
