Germany has nominated the Chief Inspector of the Bundeswehr for the position of head of the NATO Military Committee.
On Thursday, 12 February, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced the nomination of Bundeswehr Inspector General Carsten Breuer for the position of Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. He made the announcement ahead of a meeting of Alliance defence ministers in Brussels.
According to Pistorius, Breuer has made a significant contribution to the development of Germany's defence capabilities in recent years, distinguished himself with his analytical skills and strategic vision, and is well respected among his partners.
The position of Inspector General of the Bundeswehr corresponds to the functions of commander of all armed forces of the Federal Republic of Germany. Berlin considers him a strong candidate to head the Alliance's military body.
The NATO Military Committee is a key link between the bloc's political and military structures. It is traditionally headed by a high-ranking European general. Currently, this position is held by Italian Cavo Dragone, whose term expires in the summer of 2027.
The new chair is to be elected by the 32 NATO member states in September this year. To win, a candidate must secure the support of at least 17 countries.
