The UN has condemned the latest wave of Russian strikes on Dnipro, Kyiv and Odesa
This is stated in a press release issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
In the statement, Mathias Schmalle noted that he was woken by the sound of explosions at a hotel in Dnipro during heavy shelling. He emphasised that for many Ukrainian communities, life under constant attack has already become a daily reality, and in certain cities, particularly Odessa, such strikes pose an almost daily threat to the civilian population.
Schmale also emphasised that, whilst responding to the aftermath of the shelling, rescuers and humanitarian workers, who are the first to arrive at the sites of the strikes, face danger on a daily basis. According to him, civilians should not have to live under conditions of constant violence, and the wave of attacks on the civilian population must be stopped.
Reuters reported that on 16 April, Russia carried out one of the largest attacks this year, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 people in Kyiv, Odesa and Dnipro, with over 100 injured. The agency also notes that rescue operations continued following the strikes, and the death toll could rise.
Thus, the UN statement served as yet another international signal that a new wave of Russian shelling had once again been directed against Ukrainian cities and the civilian population. The humanitarian mission stated explicitly: people in Ukraine should not be forced to count new civilian casualties every day.
As reported by ThePublic, the US Senate did not pass a resolution that would have restricted the Trump administration’s ability to continue military action against Iran without specific authorisation from Congress. Despite the vote’s failure, disputes persist in the Senate regarding Congress’s role in decisions on war.
