Pete Hagseth made a strong statement on the situation in Europe
This is reported by Slovo i Dilo, citing Politico.
Hegset spoke of a ‘different invasion’ of Europe
During a ceremony in Colville-sur-Mer, France, where an American military cemetery is located, the US Secretary of Defence drew parallels between the events of the Second World War and contemporary challenges. According to Hegset, European countries today are facing “another form of invasion”.
“Today, various European shores are being stormed by various dangerous ideologies — in Spain, Italy, Greece and Bulgaria; boats and people are arriving,” he said.
The Pentagon chief asked when European capitals would respond to this situation.
“When will they do something about this invasion? Is it already too late? I pray that it isn’t, and I believe that it isn’t,” said Hegset.
US wants greater allied involvement in security
In his speech, the US Defence Secretary also stated that Washington expects a greater contribution from its partners on defence matters. According to him, the US is ready to remain the leader, but allies must act alongside America. The statement came against the backdrop of discussions regarding the future presence of American troops in Europe and the role of European countries in ensuring their own security.
