Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea for the second time this week
On Thursday evening, Polish F-16 fighter jets were scrambled once again to intercept a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. This is the second such incident this week.
The incident was reported by Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, and the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.
“This evening, a pair of our F-16s carried out yet another interception this week of a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea. The Russian Federation’s provocative actions are aimed at testing our air defence systems,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces noted that the Il-20 aircraft was in international airspace without a submitted flight plan and with its transponder switched off.
“Such provocative actions by the Russian Federation will not go unanswered; we are monitoring the situation, responding, and remain on constant alert to defend Polish airspace,” the command reported.
