On 18 July, demonstrations in support of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov continued in Kyiv and a number of other cities across Ukraine. Participants are calling for a review of the decision to dismiss him, whilst demands for the resignation of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi are also being voiced during the rallies.

This is reported by OBOZ.UA.

What are the protesters’ demands?

According to the publication, the rally was attended by volunteers, representatives of civil society organisations, military technology developers, veterans and other members of the public. They are calling for Mykhailo Fedorov to be reinstated at the Ministry of Defence and for the continuation of reforms relating to the digitalisation of the armed forces, the development of unmanned systems and modern military technologies. The largest rally, as is traditional, took place in Kyiv. Rallies were also held in Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Kropyvnytskyi and other cities.

Calls for Syrskyi’s resignation are being heard at the rallies

As well as supporting Fedorov, some of the protesters are calling for the dismissal of Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the protesters, the military leadership is not implementing modern technologies and reforms within the army effectively enough. There has been no official response to these demands from the Office of the President or the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as yet.

We would like to remind you that The Public previously reported that Kirill Budanov, Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, had responded to the public outcry that followed the dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov.

On his Telegram channel, he stated that Ukrainians have the right to ask the authorities difficult questions and demand answers, but that internal disputes must not weaken the state during wartime.

Budanov emphasised that public debate should help to make the right decisions, rather than deepening divisions. According to him, the main strength of Ukraine remains the unity of civil society, parliament, the president, the government and the Defence Forces.
