Zelenskyy is considering replacing Syrskyi
This is reported by Golovne in UA, citing the Financial Times.
What is known about the possible change of commander-in-chief
According to the publication, the head of state has been holding consultations with senior military leadership in recent days and is considering potential candidates for the post of commander-in-chief.
A source within the presidential administration told the Financial Times that Volodymyr Zelenskyy plans to meet with military commanders this weekend. During these meetings, the president intends to hear their assessment of the situation on the front line, as well as to discuss potential successors to Syrskyi. At the same time, the publication’s sources emphasise that a decision on a change in the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has not yet been taken.
Why the issue of replacing Syrskyi has become topical again
The Financial Times links the discussion of a possible reshuffle to the tense situation within the military and political leadership that arose following the dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
According to Reuters, protests took place in Kyiv for the second day running, with participants demanding Fedorov’s reinstatement and calling for Oleksandr Syrskyi’s resignation.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had explained the personnel changes as being due to serious disagreements between Mykhailo Fedorov and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which, according to the president, made it impossible for them to continue working together.
Oleksandr Syrskyi has been Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since February 2024. As of now, there have been no official statements regarding his possible dismissal or the appointment of a new Commander-in-Chief, and the Financial Times has not named any candidates who could take up this post.
