Rheinmetall opens new plant in Szeged and expands presence in Hungary
Rheinmetall has opened a new plant in Szeged, expanding its industrial presence in Hungary as an EU and NATO member state. The launch ceremony took place on 12 December with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, the Group's management and local authorities.
The new facility is Rheinmetall's first major hybrid site outside Germany, combining civilian and defence technologies under one roof. The plant is jointly managed by the Power Systems and Electronic Solutions divisions.
The company has already invested more than €34 million in the project. The total investment is expected to reach €69 million. Part of the investment is supported by the Hungarian state through the HIPA agency. The funds are used, among other things, to create new production lines for electromobility components.
The company was built in 16 months on a plot of 84 thousand square metres. The production area covers more than 15 thousand square metres, of which 8.6 thousand are used for workshops. Storage facilities are designed for 3,500 pallets. The plant plans to create more than 300 highly skilled jobs by 2030. More than 60 of them are already occupied.
The main focus of the new site is the production of high-tech components for electric mobility and hydrogen energy. At the same time, it will produce electronic components for military systems and parts for the internal combustion engine market.
Rheinmetall said it sees Hungary not only as a production location but also as one of its key home markets and a future centre of excellence in Europe.
