Orchards in the Odesa region: harvest forecasts and the price situation
This is reported by Novosti.LIVE
Condition of plantations and stages of vegetation
According to the researcher, no widespread frost damage to trees has been recorded in the region this year. The plants have sufficient reserves for a spring start and are gradually emerging from winter dormancy. The current phases of vegetation recovery are currently underway in the region.
Stone fruit crops have already passed important stages of development. In particular, cherry plums, apricots and peaches are practically finishing flowering. Next in line are apple and pear orchards. Experts note that the start of the season for the Odesa region can be considered successful, though final forecasts will depend on future weather conditions.
Shortage of fruit and vegetables in the region
Despite positive assessments of the condition of the orchards, there is a significant gap between consumption levels and local production volumes in the Odesa region. According to Stepan Chernyavsky, deputy chair of the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada, the fruit shortage in the region stands at approximately 70–80 thousand tonnes, and the vegetable shortage at around 240 thousand tonnes. One of the reasons for this situation is the seasonal factor: in spring, stocks from last year’s harvest are running out, whilst new supplies are not yet abundant. This puts pressure on the market and affects the availability of produce for consumers.
Factors influencing pricing
Prices for fruit and vegetable produce in Odesa this spring remain volatile. Experts identify several key factors driving price fluctuations:
-
Energy costs: rising electricity prices affect storage conditions in warehouses.
-
Fuel: logistics costs remain a significant component of the final price of goods.
-
Transport costs: the complexity of logistics chains during wartime is directly factored into the cost of fruit and vegetables.
Thus, although the condition of the orchards offers hope for a stable harvest, economic and logistical challenges continue to dictate pricing policies in the markets of the Odesa region.
