SSU hits Russian shadow fleet tanker in Mediterranean for the first time
Ukrainian intelligence service conducts an unprecedented operation more than 2000 kilometres away from Ukraine and disables a Russian tanker used to circumvent sanctions

The Security Service of Ukraine has successfully attacked a tanker of the Russian shadow fleet in neutral waters of the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. According to SBU sources, the operation took place at a distance of more than 2,000 kilometres from the territory of Ukraine.

As a result of multi-stage actions, the SSU Alpha unit used aerial drones to hit the QENDIL tanker, which Russia used to circumvent international sanctions. The vessel was not carrying cargo at the time of the attack, so there was no threat to the environment in the region.

According to the special service, the tanker was critically damaged and actually lost the possibility of further operation. The SSU emphasises that such vessels are part of the financial infrastructure of Russia's war, as the profits from illegal energy exports are used to finance hostilities against Ukraine.

The special service stressed that from the point of view of international law, such objects are legitimate military targets. The operation was another signal that Ukraine is capable of acting far beyond its borders and striking at the interests of the aggressor state anywhere in the world.

Russia is facing mounting pressure due to the situation on the front line, economic problems and strikes by Ukrainian drones on its territory. European officials suggest that Moscow’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric may be linked to attempts to restart the negotiation process on its own terms.
