Germany fears a reduction in the US military presence
This is according to Bloomberg.
The uncertainty is already affecting local residents
The publication cites the city of Wiesbaden as one example. Birgit Bug, a flat owner, said that for many years her flat had been rented by American military personnel stationed at a nearby US base.
After the last tenants returned to the United States in the autumn of 2025, the flat remained empty for several months.
According to her, potential tenants from the US are postponing their move due to uncertainty about the future of the American military contingent in Germany.
Why this matters
As of March 2026, around 37,000 US military personnel are stationed in Germany — this is the largest US contingent in Europe and the second largest in the world after Japan.
Key US military facilities are located in the country, including Ramstein Air Base, a military hospital, a garrison in Bavaria and the US Army Europe and Africa headquarters in Wiesbaden.
Concerns over Trump’s policies
The Guardian notes that US President Donald Trump’s statements about a possible reduction in the military presence in Germany have heightened concerns among both local communities and experts.
Ben Hodges, former commander of the US Army in Europe, stated that he saw no clear strategic logic in a possible troop withdrawal and suggested that such statements might be a political signal in relations with Berlin.
Meanwhile, a re-evaluation of defence policy is underway in Germany itself. The country is increasing its defence spending, working to strengthen its own army and discussing the possibility of reinstating certain elements of compulsory military service.
