The President of Lithuania is prepared to act as a mediator between Ukraine and Poland
He said this in an interview with the television broadcaster LNK News.
What Nausėda said
According to the Lithuanian president, Ukraine and Poland have not yet approached Lithuania with a request to join the negotiations and are continuing to discuss contentious issues directly.
At the same time, Nausėda emphasised that he is prepared to act as a mediator if both sides express a desire for this.
“I have good relations with both sides, so I could help if the need arises,” he said.
The Lithuanian President also announced that he plans to visit northern Poland in the coming days, where he will have the opportunity to hold informal talks with Polish President Karol Nawrocki and discuss the current situation.
As previously reported by The Public, tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw have recently escalated following Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s decision to strip Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the country’s highest state honour — the Order of the White Eagle.
Subsequently, the Office of the President of Poland stated that the order, returned by Zelenskyy, would be kept for life in a special vault and would not be awarded to anyone else. They also reported that the Ukrainian side had initiated a telephone conversation between the presidents, but that it had not taken place.
Historical issues also remain a point of contention between Kyiv and Warsaw, in particular the assessment of the activities of the OUN and the UPA, and the subject of the Volhynia tragedy.
