Ukraine's G7 allies to press Trump on security guarantees in Davos
The G7 countries that support Ukraine are preparing for key talks with Donald Trump during the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to the Financial Times, the leaders of Italy, Germany, France, Canada and the UK, along with the president of the European Commission, are planning to meet with Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to seek clear US approval for security guarantees for Kyiv after a possible cessation of hostilities.
The meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday next week and may take place in an expanded format with the participation of other states of the so-called coalition of the willing. In parallel, national security advisers from these countries are preparing separate consultations. This refers to the agreements worked out last week in Paris with the participation of US negotiators and the US command in Europe, which should prevent Russia from resuming the war after a possible ceasefire.
At the same time, European capitals acknowledge concern over Trump's level of personal involvement. Over the past year, he has repeatedly made statements that Europe has perceived as favourable to Moscow. At the same time, US special envoy for Russia Steve Witkoff said after the Paris talks that work on the security protocols was almost complete and they were among the toughest possible.
The US delegation to Davos will include Secretary of State Marco Rubio and several key advisers, in addition to Trump. European officials emphasise that without US involvement, the implementation of the plans, including the possible deployment of British and French forces in Ukraine after the ceasefire, is unrealistic.
The security assurances talks are part of a broader US-led peace consultation process aimed at ending Russia's nearly four-year full-scale war against Ukraine. At the same time, there is no formal trilateral format with Moscow, and it is unclear which proposals the West is willing to agree with the Kremlin.
Separately, Ukraine and the US are preparing a large-scale economic deal worth about $800 billion, which should accelerate the country's post-war recovery. According to sources, Zelenskyy and Trump may finalise it during the Davos forum. The Ukrainian side sees this plan as a ten-year programme to rebuild and modernise the economy with the participation of the US, EU and G7 countries.
