The US and Europe have agreed on security guarantees for Ukraine, but the Donbas issue remains unresolved
The United States and European countries have agreed on a joint approach to security guarantees for Ukraine as part of the peace settlement process. This was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during a Senate hearing on 28 January, according to DW.
According to him, the agreed guarantees provide for the deployment of a limited contingent of European troops, primarily from France and the United Kingdom, as well as the provision of American security guarantees. Rubio stressed that without Washington's support, European countries would not be able to implement these measures due to insufficient investment in defence over the past decades.
At the same time, the Secretary of State noted that the issue of territories in eastern Ukraine remains unresolved. According to him, active work is underway to bring the parties' positions closer together, but this issue will be difficult, especially for Ukraine.
Rubio also said that on 1 February, a US delegation will be present at the talks between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations. At the same time, he suggested that President Donald Trump's special envoy Stephen Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner will not participate in the meeting.
Earlier, the British newspaper Financial Times reported that the Trump administration links American security guarantees to Kyiv's willingness to conclude a peace agreement, which is likely to include the transfer of Donbas to Russia. According to the publication, in this case, the US promised Ukraine additional arms supplies for support in peacetime.
The first trilateral talks between representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the US took place last weekend in Abu Dhabi. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave a positive assessment of these contacts and announced a new meeting scheduled for 1 February. At the same time, Moscow confirmed its demand for the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the entire Donbas region, which Kyiv categorically rejects.
