US and Ukraine prepare $800bn deal for post-war reconstruction
Ukraine and the United States are preparing to sign a large-scale agreement on the post-war reconstruction of the country worth about $800 billion. The agreement is expected to be finalised during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump, Western officials say. This was reported by The Public with reference to Telegraph.
According to Ukrainian representatives, the so-called welfare plan is designed for ten years and should ensure economic recovery, job creation and the return of investment activity. It is a combination of loans, grants and private investments, including from international companies. BlackRock is also expected to participate in the programme, which underscores the interest of big capital in rebuilding Ukraine.
The agreement logically continues the previously signed agreements on access for US investors to future projects in Ukraine's extractive industry. Kyiv expects that Washington's economic interest will increase the US's willingness to provide real security guarantees after the eventual cessation of hostilities.
The peace package also includes negotiations on a document on security guarantees for Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy, the bilateral document with the United States is actually ready for finalisation at the highest level. At the same time, European partners advised the Ukrainian president not to rush to sign it in the White House and to choose a neutral international platform, such as Davos.
The peace consultations take place against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities and difficult negotiations over the future of the occupied territories, particularly in eastern Ukraine. Despite cautious optimism, Kyiv acknowledges that Russia's final position on ending the war remains uncertain.
