Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced a change in Budapest’s approach to the issue of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. According to him, the country supports Ukraine’s European path, but the process must take place in accordance with rules that are the same for all candidates

This is reported by ‘Glavkom’.

Hungary is reviewing its stance on Ukraine’s European integration

Following the EU summit in Brussels, Magyar emphasised that the issue of EU enlargement must remain transparent and be based on the implementation of the necessary reforms.

He noted that Budapest is not opposed to Ukraine’s EU membership, but does not support automatic or accelerated accession without following the prescribed procedures.

According to the Prime Minister, the opening of new negotiation chapters for Ukraine should depend on the fulfilment of criteria, and not merely on political decisions.

What Magyar said about Orbán’s position

At the same time, the Prime Minister recalled that the former head of government, Viktor Orbán, had previously supported Ukraine’s European integration himself. According to Mádár, even before the start of the full-scale war, Orbán had appealed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

He also noted that even after the Russian invasion had begun, Orbán, together with Péter Szijjártó, continued to speak of Kyiv’s European prospects.

“Even Orbán once belonged to this club, but one day he decided that, from a political and electoral point of view, it was more advantageous for him to side with Ukraine’s opponents and those who are blocking decisions,” said Magyar.

Budapest calls for a level playing field for candidate countries

Mátyás explained that the new government’s position is to support EU enlargement, but in accordance with the established procedure. He added that Ukraine’s accession too quickly, without completing all the necessary stages, could send a negative signal to the countries of the Western Balkans, which have been on the path to membership for years. According to the Prime Minister, Hungary is prepared to support Ukraine’s European integration, provided the process complies with the European Union’s general rules.
