Trump weighs scenarios for further action on Iran
The United States has assembled a powerful group of naval and air forces near Iran, capable of striking key targets on Iranian territory. According to sources in the American administration, President Donald Trump is currently choosing between several options, ranging from increased diplomatic pressure to limited or large-scale military operations. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal.
According to officials, the White House is discussing the possibility of attacks on Iran's nuclear programme, ballistic missile facilities, or even a scenario that could lead to the fall of the current government in Tehran. At the same time, according to interlocutors, Trump is demanding quick and decisive decisions without dragging the US into a protracted war in the Middle East. That is why the option of using military threats as leverage to achieve concessions in negotiations is being considered in parallel.
The president openly admits that the build-up of forces is also symbolic. He told reporters that American ships can be anywhere, but it makes sense for them to be close to Iran. In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran is ready for nuclear talks, but expects the US to stop its military threats.
According to experts, even weakened by sanctions and previous strikes, Iran retains the ability to respond with missile and drone attacks on American bases and allies in the region, including Israel. Analysts emphasise that there is no quick and painless solution to the Iranian issue, and the consequences of a possible strike could be long-lasting and unpredictable.
According to sources, the US administration is using the concentration of troops as a way to force Iran to agree to restrictions on its nuclear programme, missile development and support for regional allies. At the same time, Washington recognises that none of the stated goals can be achieved solely through a short air campaign.
