Brussels agrees on new sanctions against Russians: what EU ambassadors decided
At a meeting of the EU Permanent Representatives Committee in Brussels on 11 March, EU ambassadors agreed on new sanctions, including against Russian citizens.
These are decisions approved at the Coreper level.
This was reported by European Affairs Editor Rikard Jozwiak.
According to him, EU ambassadors gave the green light to sanctions against 19 individuals involved in human rights violations in Iran.
Sanctions were also agreed against a group of individuals from the Russian Federation for destabilising actions around the world.
Separately, restrictions were imposed on a group of individuals for cyberattacks against EU countries.
In addition, sanctions were agreed against individuals involved in undermining the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
In the latter case, this involves adding several new individuals to the existing sanctions list.
In the afternoon, the ambassadors are to discuss extending the existing personal sanctions related to the undermining of Ukraine's territorial integrity for another six months.
This decision must be taken by 15 March.
Otherwise, the sanctions, which have already been applied to more than 2,500 individuals, will be lifted.
The article notes that the position of EU member states, and Hungary in particular, on the extension of this type of sanctions is currently unknown.
If the ambassadors are unable to reach an agreement on this issue on Wednesday, 11 March, they will continue the discussion at the next Coreper meeting.
It is scheduled for Friday, 13 March.
