Ukraine and Moldova to open new 24-hour checkpoint for passengers and cargo
A meeting between the Ukrainian side and a government delegation from the Republic of Moldova, led by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, took place in Kyiv. During the talks, a protocol was signed to supplement the 1997 intergovernmental agreement on border crossing points on the common border.
The document concerns the movement of people and goods and provides for the official inclusion of another point in the list of international road crossings. The new point will operate around the clock for both passenger and freight traffic.
The Ukrainian side was represented by Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko. He stressed that the signed protocol creates the legal basis for opening the crossing and allows for the necessary funding to be provided for in the State Budget of Ukraine. The construction of the crossing point is already underway, with the Agency for Reconstruction coordinating the work on the Ukrainian side.
The launch of the new crossing is expected to increase freight transport capacity, make exports and imports through Moldova and Romania more efficient, and strengthen the Solidarity Routes initiative. In addition, it will reduce the burden on other crossing points.
Government officials emphasise that in wartime, the border is not only a matter of control, but also an element of logistics, economy and citizen support. The signing of the document is seen as a step towards strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova in both the short term and the future.
