Ukraine to receive €85 million grant through EBRD for gas purchases
Ukraine will attract €85 million in grant funding through European Bank for Reconstruction and Development instruments to purchase additional volumes of natural gas. This was announced on Tuesday, 27 January, by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal after talks with EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso.
According to Shmyhal, the procedures for obtaining a grant from one of the European countries are being finalised. He thanked the partners for their support and stressed that the government would continue to work on finding additional sources of funding for the energy sector.
The minister also informed the EBRD about the difficult situation in the energy system caused by systematic Russian attacks. According to him, continued financial support for Ukrenergo and Ukrhydroenergo is critical for repairs, equipment purchases, and the implementation of new technical solutions to provide consumers with light and heat.
The Ministry of Economy previously stated that the need for gas imports for the current heating season was estimated at 4 billion cubic metres. Most of this volume has already been purchased, delivered and used. The government, together with Naftogaz and with the support of international partners, covered most of the financing for gas imports in February and March. The unmet needs currently amount to about $100 million, but the ministry assures that there are no threats to gas imports.
