Zelenskyy and Fico: what they discussed and how the public is reacting
This was stated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The Slovak leader emphasised that his country sincerely wishes to see Ukraine as a stable and democratic state. That is why Bratislava officially supports Kyiv’s European ambitions and is ready to facilitate Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. According to Fico, a successful Ukraine is in Slovakia’s strategic interest as a direct neighbour.
Diplomatic breakthrough: meetings and joint government work
Following the talks, the parties agreed to intensify political dialogue. As early as next Monday, the leaders will hold a brief meeting in Yerevan as part of the European Political Community (EPC) summit. This will serve as an important platform for aligning positions ahead of the next stages of cooperation. In addition to personal meetings, Robert Fico has initiated the continuation of the format of joint meetings between the governments of both countries. This approach allows practical issues relating to the economy, energy and cross-border cooperation to be resolved at ministerial level. The Slovak Prime Minister paid particular attention to the issue of ending the war, noting that any future peace agreement with the Russian Federation cannot be concluded without the full consent of the Ukrainian side.
Reaction from the Slovak public
The Prime Minister’s statement sparked a lively debate among Slovaks. Some citizens express scepticism regarding Ukraine’s rapid European integration, suggesting that due to the war and the need for reforms, this process could take decades. At the same time, many emphasise the humanitarian aspect, stressing that peace must be the top priority.
