Ukraine is set to hold talks with European representatives this week on the creation of a joint air defence system. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this in an address marking Ukrainian Gunsmiths’ Day.
“As early as this week, we will be holding talks with the Europeans – negotiations on the creation of a joint air defence system. I am certain: either Ukraine will become an integral part of the European security system, or some in Europe risk becoming part of the ‘Russian world’,” he stated.
According to the President, Ukraine is among the leaders in the development of security technologies, and its military experience and expertise are in demand in dozens of countries around the world.
He emphasised that cooperation with partners in the field of armaments is taking place under a new model. “We are not holding a fair for our weapons and we are not emptying our warehouses. We are offering a security partnership – one that is long-term and profitable for Ukraine,” Zelenskyy noted.
The President reported that Ukrainian interceptors are already being deployed in the Middle East and the Gulf states. He also noted that Ukraine is creating an integrated air defence system comprising various components.
“Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar have their own air defence systems against ballistic and other missiles. But, combined with our military expertise, they have the means to defend against ‘Shaheds’, to detect this threat and respond on a large scale. Radar coverage, the necessary electronic warfare systems, communication between air defence components and the interception itself – Ukraine is capable of doing all of this,” he said.
Zelenskyy added that Ukraine is also in communication with Kuwait, Oman, Turkey and Syria, and has attracted interest from countries in Asia and Africa.
Separately, the president mentioned Ukraine’s experience in the field of maritime security. According to him, Ukrainian forces have carried out missions in the Black Sea, including countering naval forces, air strikes and sea mines.
He also stated that Ukrainian maritime drones – the Sea Baby, Magura and Sargan – are already well-known worldwide, as are Ukrainian artillery, ammunition and armoured vehicles.
“And none of this is a gift from Ukraine. Long-term security agreements in the Middle East provide our state with funding every year; they are the fuel Ukraine needs in the face of global instability. They also provide the types of weapons we lack but which our partners possess,” he concluded.
