An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck the Turkish province of Malatya on the morning of 20 May. The epicentre of the tremors was recorded in the Battalgazi district. Following the earthquake, schools in the area were closed, and people began to leave buildings and gather in open spaces.
France summoned the Israeli ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following reports of the treatment of detained activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla. This refers to an international flotilla that was heading to Gaza on a humanitarian mission and was intercepted by Israeli forces.
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Embassy’s chargé d’affaires and lodged a protest over a public statement by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. Officials in Riga stated that the Russian side was spreading false information about the alleged use of Latvian territory and airspace to launch attacks on targets in Russia.
Ukrainians will be able to pay less for heating and hot water if, due to Russian attacks, these services were provided intermittently or were of significantly poorer quality. The government has clarified the adjustment mechanism: in such cases, consumers will only have to pay 20% of the cost of the service.

Bruno Retailleau, former French Minister of the Interior and president of the Republicans party, has arrived in Kyiv. He is a candidate in the 2027 French presidential election. Retailleau chose Ukraine as the destination for his first international campaign tour and stated that the country has been resisting Russian aggression for over four years.
Ukraine wants to increase Europe’s involvement in potential peace talks with Russia. To this end, it is considering reviving the E3 diplomatic format, involving the UK, France and Germany.
Businessman Timur Mindich has filed a lawsuit against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He is seeking to have the decree imposing personal sanctions against him overturned. News of the lawsuit emerged on 14 May. The panel of judges who will hear the businessman’s case has already been appointed.
Government Bill No. 15258 has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada; it aims to introduce liability for violations committed during the granting of statuses related to the war and the defence of Ukraine. This concerns the status of combatants, persons with war-related disabilities, war veterans, family members of deceased veterans, Defenders of Ukraine and other categories defined by law.
Nine pupils were injured in Sevastopol after a balcony collapsed at School No. 13. Three of the children are in a critical condition. The injured include six boys and three girls, all aged 17. According to updated reports, a further six pupils are in a serious condition.
ARMA has announced a tender to select an administrator for assets that belonged to the sanctioned businessman Kostyantyn Zhevago. These assets consist of real estate owned by SKN “Suchasna Komertsiyna Nерухомість” LLC.
