A dam has burst in the Kuban region: a state of emergency has been declared in Russia
Floodwaters are submerging thousands of hectares of farmland
A state of emergency has been declared in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai following the breach of a dam on the Kuban River. The floodwaters are inundating towns and villages and thousands of hectares of farmland

This has been reported by Channel 24, citing Russian media.

Due to the dam breach, a state of emergency has been declared in the Krymsky and Slavyansky districts of the Krasnodar Region. Restrictions are in place in several rural settlements. Local residents have already been warned of a possible evacuation should the situation worsen.

What is known about the consequences of the dam breach

According to local authorities, water continues to rise and flood areas near the Kuban River. Agricultural land has been hardest hit. Over 4,300 hectares of crops are under water, a significant proportion of which are wheat fields. Flooding has also been reported in residential areas. In Labinsk, water has entered private properties and entered one of the houses.

The situation is worsening as the breach widens

In Krasnodar, following the rise in water levels, dozens of private homes, surrounding areas and basements have been flooded. Utility services are continuing to pump out water, whilst special commissions are assessing the damage caused. According to Russian media reports, the damaged section of the dam continues to grow — the width of the breach has already reached around 80 metres.
