Fury urges Usyk to leave WBC title due to lack of commercial fights
Former world champion Tyson Fury said that the current WBC belt holder Oleksandr Usyk should give up the title due to the lack of commercially attractive fights in the organisation's rankings. Fury said this in a commentary to DAZN.
According to the Briton, the WBC World Boxing Council found itself in a controversial situation with the definition of contenders. He pointed out that the fight between Lawrence Okolie and Moses Itauma was granted the status of a mandatory challenger, while Agit Kabayel holds the interim championship belt. According to Fury, the WBC should either oblige Usyk to defend the title or declare it vacant.
Fury stressed that Usyk's fights with boxers from the current WBC rankings do not make financial sense. He noted that after the highly profitable fights with him, the Ukrainian champion is unlikely to return to lower-grossing fights without significant audience interest. That's why, according to the British pundit, Usyk will look for options with more media rivals or leave the belt, as he did with the WBO title.
According to Fury, in case of a vacant WBC title, Agit Kabael will be promoted to a full-fledged champion and will be able to defend the belt against the winner of the Okolie vs Itauma fight. It will be recalled that Usyk won the WBC title in 2024 by defeating Tyson Fury and maintains an impeccable record of 24 wins, including 15 by knockout.
