France thrashed Sweden to reach the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup
The French national team secured a convincing victory over Sweden in their round of 32 match at the 2026 World Cup. The match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, USA, ended 3–0.
The French could have opened the scoring as early as the 20th minute. Kylian Mbappé found the net following a pass from Michael Olise, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Towards the end of the first half, Didier Deschamps’ side finally took the lead. In the 45th minute, Mbappé received the ball in the penalty area following a pass from Ousmane Dembélé and sent it into the far corner with a precise shot.
After the break, the French continued to control the game and extended their lead. In the 53rd minute, Bradley Barcola, following a pass from Michael Olise from just outside the penalty area, fired a precise shot into the left corner of the net.
The final score was sealed in the 74th minute. Michael Olise played a through ball to set up Kylian Mbappé in front of the opposition’s goal, after which the striker completed his brace.
In the World Cup round of 16, France will face Paraguay, who sensationally knocked Germany out on penalties in the opening round of the knockout stages.
The 2026 World Cup runs from 11 June to 19 July in the USA, Mexico and Canada. This is the first World Cup to feature 48 national teams, the largest number in the tournament’s history.
