Europe is preparing a package of security guarantees for Ukraine, details to be agreed in January
Ukraine's European allies will meet in January to agree on the final parameters of security guarantees for the period after a possible ceasefire. A spokesman for the Elysee Palace said that the presence of troops on the ground as an element of deterrence and support is among the options being discussed.
It is the work of a group of countries known as the Coalition of the Willing, promoted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Paris expects that the agreed package should give Kyiv a clearer horizon of long-term support and clear tools for responding in case of violation of the agreements.
The context for the intensification of consultations was the new negotiations between Washington and Kyiv and the preparation of a framework plan for ending the war, which, according to Western media, is awaiting Moscow's response. Against this backdrop, European capitals are trying to synchronise military, financial and institutional support for Ukraine in a scenario of a pause in hostilities without compromising the country's defence capabilities.
