The European Parliament is preparing to vote on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine
On Wednesday, the European Parliament will vote on the Ukraine Support Programme and a €90 billion loan. This was announced by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola during the opening of the session in Strasbourg.
According to her, the agenda for Wednesday will include the introduction of enhanced cooperation, the approval of a loan for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027, and amendments to the Rules of Procedure regarding the creation of a Support Mechanism for Ukraine. It also concerns adjustments to the EU's multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027 to ensure financial assistance to Kyiv.
The request for an urgent procedure was submitted by three political groups in the European Parliament: EPP, S&D and Renew. The vote on this request is scheduled for Tuesday. If approved, the final decision on the loan will be taken on Wednesday.
In addition to the financial package, on Wednesday the European Commission will issue a statement on the European response to Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy system, which have caused a humanitarian crisis. This discussion will take place against the backdrop of winter shelling and electricity shortages in Ukraine.
It is also reported that on 24 February, the European Parliament plans to hold an extraordinary meeting in Brussels on the fourth anniversary of the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. According to Metsola, the presence of MEPs at this meeting should be an important political signal of support for Ukraine.
The European Parliament session in Strasbourg runs from 9 to 12 February.
