Meloni and Vence in Milan declared shared Western values
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with US Vice President Jay D. Vance in Milan on Friday, 6 February, ahead of the opening ceremony of the XXV Winter Olympic Games. This was reported by ANSA.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also took part in the talks. The American delegation arrived in Milan to participate in the celebrations at the San Siro stadium and to discuss bilateral relations.
Meloni recalled that the previous meeting with Vance took place in Rome during the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV. According to her, both the Pope's enthronement ceremony and the opening of the Olympics symbolise the system of values that unites Europe and the United States.
She stressed that Italy and the United States have a long-standing and meaningful relationship and are working to strengthen cooperation not only bilaterally but also on current international issues.
In turn, the US Vice President noted the high level of organisation of the Winter Olympic Games in Italy. He emphasised the strong political and economic ties between the countries and noted that he and his wife had long planned to attend the Olympics after taking office.
As reported, the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics will take place on 6 February at the San Siro Stadium in Milan. The competition will last until 22 February. More than 4,000 athletes from 96 countries will take part in it, competing for 116 sets of awards in 16 sports. The Paralympic Games are scheduled for 6 to 15 March.
