Mobilisation in Ukraine: what could reduce the need for conscription
Bogdan Popov, an expert at the ‘United Ukraine’ think tank, made this statement during a broadcast on the ‘Kyiv 24’ television channel.
What factors could influence the need for mobilisation
According to Popov, drones and robotic systems are playing an increasingly significant role on the battlefield. It is these systems that enable some combat tasks to be carried out without the direct involvement of large numbers of military personnel.
However, it is still too early to talk of a complete replacement of the infantry. According to the expert, even the most modern weaponry is not capable of fully taking over the functions of soldiers carrying out tasks directly on the front line.
Popov identified another possible avenue as the recruitment of foreign nationals into the Ukrainian armed forces. However, he noted that this would require not only expanding the recruitment system but also training commanders and officers who are proficient in foreign languages and capable of working effectively with such units.
The expert does not expect rapid changes
Popov emphasised that both approaches require long-term effort. The development of new military technologies, as well as the creation of an effective system for recruiting foreign volunteers, is a process that will take years.
That is why, the expert believes, these measures can only gradually reduce the need for mobilisation, but are not capable of quickly eliminating the manpower shortage in the Defence Forces.
