Sweden thrashed Tunisia to top Group F at the World Cup
Sweden thrashed Tunisia 5–1 in their opening Group F match of the 2026 World Cup. The match took place at the Estadio BBVA near Monterrey in Mexico.
The Swedish team opened the scoring as early as the seventh minute. Yassin Ayari put his side ahead with a precise long-range strike. After scoring, the player celebrated the goal modestly, raising his hands in a gesture of respect for the country where his father was born.
In the 30th minute, Alexander Isak extended Sweden’s lead. Following a counter-attack, Viktor Djokeres found the striker with a pass; he cut inside and fired a low shot past Tunisia’s goalkeeper Mouib Chamakh.
Towards the end of the first half, Tunisia pulled one back. In the 43rd minute, Omar Rekik scored against the Swedish side.
After the break, Sweden quickly regained control of the game. Isak won the ball and set up Viktor Djokeres for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The forward made no mistake and made it 3-1. This goal was his 21st for the national team and his 16th in his last 15 matches for the national side.
Sweden’s head coach Graham Potter highlighted the understanding between Isak and Dökér.
“They needed a team that functions well behind them. I’m pleased that we took a step forward today,” said the manager.
The Swedes scored their fourth goal in the 84th minute. Mattias Svanberg found the net after a lengthy VAR review.
In stoppage time in the second half, Yassin Ayari completed his brace with a long-range strike to make the final score 5-1.
After the first round of matches, Sweden top Group F. Earlier in the group, the Netherlands and Japan drew 2–2.
In the second round, Sweden will face the Netherlands in Houston on 20 June. Tunisia will play Japan in Monterrey on the same day.
