Trump is restoring Alcatraz: $152 million has been allocated in the US budget

Is ‘The Rock’ returning to service?
The legendary Alcatraz, located near San Francisco, ceased to function as a maximum-security prison back in 1963. For the past few decades, it has been a national park and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the US. However, Trump’s new budget plan envisages radical changes: the funds are intended to cover the costs of transforming ‘The Rock’ into an operational prison.
‘An absurd idea’: politicians’ reaction
The initiative has already sparked a wave of scepticism in California. The main critic was former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, who called on Congress to reject the proposal immediately.
“Converting Alcatraz into a modern prison is a foolish idea that would be nothing more than a waste of taxpayers’ money and an insult to the intelligence of the American people,” Pelosi stated.
What next?
Despite the plan’s ambition, its implementation depends on congressional approval. Opponents of the project point to the technical complexity of operating the island as a prison and the enormous costs required for logistics and security in modern conditions.
