Ukraine will be the first to test Leonardo's new Michelangelo air defence dome
This was reported by Defense Express, citing a statement by Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani.
Ukraine may become the first country to test components of the latest integrated air and missile defence system Michelangelo from the Italian company Leonardo in combat conditions.
According to reports, testing of individual elements of the system could begin as early as the end of 2026.
At the same time, NATO countries are only planning to test this solution from 2027.
These plans were announced by Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani.
According to him, the first component of the Michelangelo dome is currently being built for Ukraine.
The company did not specify which elements of the system are to be tested on Ukrainian territory.
At the same time, Leonardo emphasises that testing new technologies in real combat conditions is an effective approach.
Michelangelo is positioned as an integrated system that will combine air and missile defence capabilities.
It is expected to be able to intercept a wide range of air threats, from drones to ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
According to Defense Express, during tests in Ukraine, the system's capabilities in countering drones may be tested first.
Leonardo also notes that Michelangelo will use new-generation sensors, artificial intelligence, and the MC5 multi-domain control module.
This module will coordinate the operation of various air defence systems.
The full integration of Michelangelo into the defence systems of NATO and European Union countries is planned to be completed by 2030.
Against the backdrop of these plans, the issue of strengthening air defence for Ukraine remains one of the key ones.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine continues to raise the issue of the shortage of missiles for air defence systems.
