Ukrainian ports and Ukrzaliznytsia will be defended against drones by volunteers, says Kuleba
Ukraine’s infrastructure, particularly its railway facilities and ports, is under constant threat from Russian attacks aimed at cutting off export routes and blocking key logistics routes. To ensure the security of strategic facilities, the government has decided to enlist volunteers from local communities to help with their defence.
Oleksii Kuleba, Minister for Community and Territorial Development, reported that Ukraine’s railway infrastructure is currently subjected to around ten shelling incidents every night, and attacks on ports have become particularly severe. Russia is attempting to block supplies that are critical to the country’s economy, notably through attacks on key transport hubs that provide links to the front line.
In response to these threats, the government has adopted a resolution allowing members of the Territorial Defence Forces to be deployed to combat enemy drones. These volunteers, despite not being military personnel, are authorised to carry out missions to destroy drones at ports and railway facilities.
“We have begun deploying the first teams in ports and at Ukrzaliznytsia, who are already successfully carrying out drone-shooting missions. They are part of local communities, but are already actively helping to defend our infrastructure,” the minister emphasised.
These innovations aim to preserve the country’s export potential and support the stable operation of the transport network during wartime. Furthermore, the government is actively cooperating with the military to strengthen security measures in the logistics sector.
Ukrzaliznytsia, for its part, has already stepped up security measures due to the threat of attacks on railway infrastructure and has developed a clear protocol for passengers in the event of an attack. In the event of a threat from drones, passengers will be evacuated from carriages to minimise risks.
