Ukrainian language to be introduced in Vienna schools in 2026
Vienna is considering the possibility of including Ukrainian as a second foreign language in secondary school curricula. The initiative may be launched in September 2026 and will cover two educational institutions in the Austrian capital.
According to the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Austria, these are the BRO (BORG 3) school at Landstraßer Hauptstraße, 70 and the BRW (GRG 15) school at Diefenbachgasse, 19. It is in these institutions that the Ukrainian language is planned to be offered to students of the upper level of education - Oberstufe - starting from the 9th year of study.
It is expected that Ukrainian will be available as a second foreign language within the individual curriculum. At the same time, the launch of the courses will directly depend on the number of people interested: to open the groups, it is necessary to collect a sufficient number of applications from students.
The diplomatic mission called on Ukrainian families in Vienna to actively contribute to the formation of demand and choose Ukrainian when planning their studies. The introduction of such an opportunity is seen as an important step towards preserving the linguistic heritage, supporting cultural identity and integrating Ukrainian children into the European educational space without losing contact with their native language.
