Ukrenergo reported complications in the power system: consumption has increased and power cuts are in effect
Ukraine has seen an increase in electricity consumption amid a sharp cold snap, the aftermath of Russian attacks, and difficult weather conditions. This was reported by the National Energy Company Ukrenergo.
According to the company, as of this morning, consumers in the Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Cherkasy regions remain without power. In regions where the security situation allows, emergency repair work is continuing in order to restore power as quickly as possible.
Due to the consequences of previous Russian missile and drone attacks on energy infrastructure, on 2 February, power restriction schedules for industrial consumers and hourly power cuts for the population are being applied in all regions of Ukraine. In some regions, emergency power cuts have been introduced, which will be cancelled once the power system has stabilised.
Electricity consumption continues to grow. As of 09:30 on 2 February, it was 7.5% higher than at the same time on the previous working day. This was due to lower temperatures across the country and fewer restrictions in a number of regions. The previous day, 1 February, evening peak consumption exceeded the previous Sunday's figure by 7%.
Ukrenergo emphasises the need to use electricity sparingly throughout the day. Ukrainians are asked to minimise the use of powerful electrical appliances and, if possible, to shift energy-intensive processes to night-time hours — after 23:00. This will help reduce the duration of forced outages.
In addition, bad weather has caused additional problems. Due to ice and freezing of power lines, 162 settlements in the Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kirovohrad regions were completely or partially de-energised in the morning. Repair crews from the regional power company are working to restore the damaged networks.
Ukrenergo warns that the situation in the power system may change and advises people to follow the official announcements of distribution system operators in their regions.
