A ‘deputy’ of the occupying authorities in the Kherson region has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment
This has been reported by VHORU, citing the court’s verdict.
What the investigation established
According to the case file, in the summer of 2023, Fomin, in the temporarily occupied town of Henichesk, put himself forward as a candidate for the local branch of the Russian party ‘United Russia’.
He subsequently became a so-called deputy of the illegal body established by the Russian Federation’s occupying authorities in the Kherson region.
The investigation established that the man publicly called on residents of the temporarily occupied territories to take part in the sham elections.
Supported the Russian Federation on Telegram
In addition to his involvement in the occupation structures, Fomin created and administered a Telegram channel.
According to the investigation, he used it to disseminate material in support of the Russian military, report on the conduct of the illegal elections and justify the Russian Federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine.
The case file also mentions his posts featuring Russian symbols and ‘United Russia’ party paraphernalia.
What sentence did the court impose?
Oleksandr Fomin was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment without confiscation of property.
He was also banned for 15 years from holding office in government or local government bodies and from engaging in activities related to the provision of public services and the electoral process.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of the Kherson region, thousands of people have been notified that they are suspected of crimes against the foundations of national security. The majority of cases relate specifically to collaboration.
