Keir Starmer may announce his resignation as British Prime Minister on 22 June
This is according to The Observer.
Why there is talk of Starmer’s possible departure
According to the publication, Starmer is holding consultations following Andy Burnham’s victory in the by-election in Makerfield and his return to Westminster. Sources within the Labour Party claim that the leader has been discussing the situation with members of the government, Downing Street advisers, trade union representatives and party donors. According to the publication’s sources, Starmer has reportedly acknowledged that his continued tenure in office is becoming increasingly difficult. He is due to make a final decision after discussions with his family.
The Labour Party is talking of an ‘orderly transition’
Sources at The Observer note that, should he decide to step down, Starmer does not plan to leave Downing Street abruptly. The plan is for a gradual handover of power and the establishment of a timetable for the change in party leadership. One of the Prime Minister’s allies stated that Starmer wants to avoid political instability and ensure an “orderly process”.
Andy Burnham strengthens his position
Andy Burnham’s return to Parliament has significantly shifted the balance of power within the Labour Party.
According to the publication, his supporters claim he has the backing of over 200 MPs, which could enable him to challenge Starmer in the leadership contest.
Burnham is due to be sworn in as an MP on 22 June and is expected to meet with Starmer in the near future.
What they’re saying on Downing Street
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s representatives have dismissed reports of a possible resignation as mere speculation.
Starmer himself has previously stated that he is ready to fight for the party leadership and intends to continue his work.
