US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent advised Donald Trump not to receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office ahead of the controversial meeting at the White House

This is reported by The Guardian

What the book says about Zelenskyy

The authors claim that Bessent was strongly opposed to Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy.

According to journalists, during private discussions, the American official allegedly used derogatory language towards the Ukrainian president, calling him a “little freak”, “a child with special needs” and comparing him to “Mr Bean on crack”.

The book notes that these remarks were made during the preparations for Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington.

The meeting at the White House ended in a row

Despite denials, the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in the Oval Office took place on 28 February 2025.

It ended in a public row after Trump and Vice-President J.D. Vance criticised the Ukrainian president.

In particular, they claimed that Ukraine was not showing sufficient gratitude to the US for its assistance in the war against Russia. During the meeting, they also discussed Zelenskyy’s appearance, as he had arrived without a traditional suit.

A book about Trump’s second administration

The book *Regime Change* is dedicated to the work of Donald Trump’s second administration and describes internal discussions within his team.

The authors provide details of behind-the-scenes conversations and conflicts between US officials.
