The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has effectively issued an ultimatum to Alexander Lukashenko, calling on him to remove, within a week, the equipment used by Russian troops to direct strikes against Ukraine from Belarusian territory

Zelenskyy made this statement on 19 June during a joint press conference with the President of Honduras, Nasri Asfour, in Kyiv, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

Zelenskyy addressed Lukashenko

The President commented on Lukashenko’s statements that he allegedly does not want Belarus to be drawn into the war. Zelenskyy noted that Minsk’s actual actions must match these words.

He recalled that from the very first days of the full-scale invasion, Russia had been using Belarusian territory to launch strikes against Ukraine.

“When Mr Lukashenko says he does not want to be drawn into the war, he must be honest, at least with his own people. His entire country could be drawn into the war by Russia,” Zelenskyy stated.

According to the President of Ukraine, relay stations are still located at Belarusian sites, helping the Russian army to attack Ukrainian territory.

“There’s no need for further explanation. He currently has relay stations on his towers that are directing fire at the Ukrainian population,” said Zelenskyy.

The President emphasised that Lukashenko could dismantle this equipment himself.

“I think a week would be enough for him to do this. If he doesn’t do it, we will,” he stressed.

What else did Zelenskyy say about Belarus?

Zelenskyy also accused Minsk of continuing to support the Russian army. According to him, Belarus remains one of the suppliers of resources to the Russian Federation. The President noted that Lukashenko has the opportunity to cease such support if he genuinely does not want his country to be further drawn into the war. It should be recalled that Zelenskyy had previously stated that Russia is attempting to drag Belarus into the war against Ukraine. The Ukrainian side has also reported activity near the border and its readiness to respond to potential threats. Robert Brovdi (“Madyar”), commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Unmanned Systems Forces, reported that Ukraine had identified potential targets on Belarusian territory in the event of Minsk’s direct entry into the war.
