Poland has set out a condition for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia
This was reported by Radio Free Europe, citing Tusk’s statement following the European Union summit.
Why Poland wants to take part in the negotiations
According to the Polish Prime Minister, future decisions regarding a ceasefire or peace agreements between Ukraine and Russia will have direct consequences not only for Kyiv, but also for neighbouring states. Tusk emphasised that no single format of negotiations should, on its own, represent the position of the entire European Union.
“Any agreements on a ceasefire or future peace between Ukraine and Russia will also directly affect Poland. Therefore, either decisions must be taken within the EU framework, or Poland must be directly involved in them. Otherwise, we will not recognise such agreements,” he said.
What Tusk said about support for Ukraine
At the same time, the Polish Prime Minister noted that there are currently no signs that Russia is ready for genuine negotiations. According to him, Europe’s main task remains supporting Ukraine so that it can continue to resist Russian aggression. Tusk emphasised that supporting Ukraine is in Poland’s own strategic interests.
“No one will convince me that it should be any different. This is in Poland’s interests. Not only because it is morally right and we do not want Russia to win, but also because it is in Poland’s interests that Ukraine does not lose this war under any circumstances,” the Prime Minister stressed.
What discussions are taking place in Europe
The question of the future format of negotiations to end the war remains a topic of discussion among European partners.
The leaders of the UK, France, Germany and Ukraine have previously stressed that Europe must be involved in the process of resolving the conflict and defining the terms of a just peace.
At the same time, discussions are ongoing within the EU as to who exactly should represent the bloc’s position in any potential talks on ending the war.
The President of the European Council, António Costa, has spoken of the need for diplomatic channels that will allow the EU to convey its positions independently and assess signals from Russia.
The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, also emphasised that Europe supports Ukraine and cannot act as a neutral mediator, but that diplomatic efforts must complement the work of its partners.
