Defence and energy: what support did Ukraine receive from international partners in January
Throughout January, international partners provided Ukraine with large-scale military, energy, and humanitarian aid, which allowed the country to withstand constant Russian attacks and difficult winter conditions. This was reported by the press service of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine on Facebook.
As noted by the NSDC, the key area of support remained the strengthening of air defence. Norway transferred missiles to the NASAMS systems, Finland provided a 31st military aid package worth €98 million, which included missiles for air defence. The United Kingdom also transferred missiles for air defence, and Germany continued regular deliveries of missiles to Iris-T systems. In addition, Ukraine received a substantial package to strengthen its air defence within the PURL mechanism with the participation of several partner states.
At the same time, international partners have significantly increased their energy support to Ukraine in order to eliminate the consequences of Russian shelling as quickly as possible. The United States has allocated more than $400 million to humanitarian projects to support Ukrainians this winter. Norway has provided another $400 million, in particular for the energy sector.
The United Kingdom has contributed nearly €23 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. The European Union has donated around 450 generators. Germany has allocated €60 million and additional equipment. Italy has provided €10 million to the Energy Support Fund, allocated €50 million in its 2026 budget to assist Ukraine's energy sector, and has already delivered 78 industrial boilers with a total capacity of 116.5 MW.
The Netherlands also provided an additional €23 million for the energy sector, Denmark allocated €20 million, France delivered more than 100 generators, Japan delivered 140 generators, 60 transformers and two cogeneration units, and Lithuania provided 90 generators.
The National Security and Defence Council emphasised that this aid saves lives, strengthens Ukraine's resilience and enables it to resist aggression, calling on partners to continue to strengthen their support, which brings a just peace closer for the whole of Europe.
